Five Years Later: Destination Crenshaw Tests the Patience of the Community It Was Built to Honor
For much of the 20th century, discriminatory housing practices—including racially restrictive covenants and redlining—limited where Black Angelenos could live. As thousands of African Americans arrived in Los Angeles during the Second Great Migration, many settled in neighborhoods surrounding Crenshaw, helping transform the corridor into one of the nation's most important centers of Black homeownership, entrepreneurship and civic life.

Matthew Tecle, executive director of Safe Parking LA, said the network of programs designed to help people transition out of homelessness is becoming increasingly constrained.
“What I’m seeing now is similar to a car being stripped for parts,” Tecle said. “The homeless services system is undergoing a massive contraction.”
